Paper 03 · Axis C

Fractures of the Left: Shared Goal, Split Method, Captured Words

Date every sense. Shared goal; method split as the theories grew. The left-hand capture. Paper 07 is the right.

Research draft · 21 September 2026

Claim

Nineteenth-century anarchists and pre-Lenin Marxists were after the same theory — no class monopoly of command; decentralized association — and split, as the theories grew, on organization and method of transition. The Marxist method is a series of steps: leave mixed; socialize the means of production; hold a dictatorship of the proletariat as a stepping stone to common ownership. Applied Marxism-Leninism did not retire the state. Ordinary speech now names that office “communism.” Center libertarianism pulls agorism for withering and Bakunin for firm structuring; the rest is for a declaration that does not yet exist. The other capture of “libertarian” — Russell 1955, LP 1971, Nozick 1974 — is Paper 07. This is a scientific reconstruction, not a call to violence.

Proudhon–Marx 1846 · Hague 1872 · Bakunin · agorism · red scare

Internal history

Goal shared, method not

Do not flatten mutualists, collectivists, anarchist communists, syndicalists, and platformists into “the left.” The left/right property chasm is a different axis.

1872 · Method split

Hague, then Saint-Imier

The foundational method split. Hague (2–7 Sept): Bakunin and Guillaume expelled; political-party road. Saint-Imier (15–16 Sept): a new political authority to destroy political authority would be as dangerous as any government now in existence.

The revolutionary left of the anarchists and the Marxists was, in the nineteenth century, after the same theory in the sense that matters for this program: a class monopolizes command over labor-time through title and/or the office; the end-state is no such monopoly, a decentralized association of producers, and a public power that is no longer a separate machine beside society. As those theories grew, the disparity became obvious — not first as a quarrel about the good life, but as a quarrel about organization and the method of transition. They remained close on the end goal. They did not remain close on how to get there, or on who would be the organ of getting there.

Ordinary speech in the United States now names “communism” as a party-state. That is semantic capture after 1917, reinforced by red scares, not a reading of Marx and Engels’s stated end-state. The same capture happened, in the other direction, to “libertarian.” This paper is the historical record of the shared theory, of each load-bearing theorist’s contribution, and of the method split as it became undeniable. It is a scientific reconstruction from primary sources, not a manifesto and not a brief for violence.

This paper keeps four jobs separate:

  1. Date the words.
  2. Reconstruct the shared goal as a theory, and the method split as it grew (1846–48; 1872; 1917–24).
  3. Expand each theorist: what they contributed, where they sat on organization and transition.
  4. Name, without flattening, what Center Libertarianism pulls from the hybrid — agorism for withering, Bakunin for firm structuring, other pieces for a declaration that does not yet exist. The other capture of “libertarian” — the American inversion — is Foundations of the Right. This paper is the left file. The map places this file on our shoe — the lower bowl of the hourglass, this program’s invention — at the left-anarchist tip: Faye’s left horn is the party-state; Marxism’s stated goal sits here, with Déjacque and Kropotkin. The left horn is not a jump. Leave mixed going left and the Marxist method is a series of steps: socialization of the means of production, then a dictatorship of the proletariat as a stepping stone to common ownership. In practice that office became the party-state.

It does not propose the stack. That is Center. It does not treat polarity. That is Game of Empires. It does not underwrite either side with biology. That is Competition & Mutual Aid — where the party-state’s argument is cooperation (class solidarity, common plant) and its practice is command, which is why the stated goal sits on our shoe and this seat pinches as office. It does not substitute a solution concept for a method. That is Equilibria. It does not advocate seizing an office, and it does not advocate violent means to a revolutionary end. The aim is to fill a gap of logic: goal shared, method not, words captured, and a proposed hybrid that still has to be vetted at the joints where past attempts decomposed.

Déjacque is the first recorded political use of libertaire as a self-description. In 1857 he tells Proudhon that a man who wants free trade in cotton while rebuilding “the high barony of male over female vassal” is “liberal and not libertarian.” The US capture of the word a century later inverted the polarity: “libertarian” became the name of a property-and-markets identity. Both uses exist. Papers that do not date them argue with ghosts.

Le Havre 1880 is a French workers’ congress, not an anarchist founding congress. Maitron records that it named communisme libertaire as the final goal while remaining split on political action. Date the phrase. Do not treat Havre as the invention of the idea — Déjacque and the 1876–80 Jura turn come first.

2. The shared theory

A usable statement of the shared 19th-century diagnosis (Marx, Proudhon, Bakunin, later Kropotkin): a class monopolizes command over labor-time via the state and/or absentee title. The target is not “having things.” The target is dominion — the right to command other people’s time through title or office.

Rough shared goal: no class monopoly of command; decentralized association of producers; the state as a separate public power beside society is to retire (Engels, Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, 1884, the bronze-axe image). In this register, “stateless” left-libertarianism is a misnomer for majority-run / federated government, not for a vacuum.

They did not share a property axiom. Proudhon’s “property is theft” (Qu’est-ce que la propriété?, 1840) is a claim about dominion, later paired with possession. Marx after 1848 aims at abolition of bourgeois property in the means of production, not of personal effects (Manifesto: “the distinguishing feature of Communism is not the abolition of property generally, but the abolition of bourgeois property”). Right-libertarian reception treats this as an attack on the person as unit. That reception is part of the vernacular problem, not a reading of the text. The right-hand reconstruction of that unit — Locke, the proviso, limited liability, the 1955 word — is Foundations of the Right. The fight with this paper is over property. That is the program’s proposition, not a slogan.

What “the same theory” does not mean. It does not mean they wrote one book. It does not mean the 1872 split was a misunderstanding. It means: on the end-state — no class monopoly of command, association of producers, the office not a standing machine — the revolutionary left was closer than later speech can hear. On organization (party, council, section, syndicate, brotherhood) and on transition (seize the office; destroy political power first; slow fire; mass strike; counter-economy), the theories grew apart in public, in congresses, and then in blood. CenLib’s claim is that the end-state is still the thing worth reconciling with a right-libertarian insistence on the person as unit of title, and that the method must be named as a hybrid rather than inherited as a church. The right-hand file is now its own paper. This paper does not have to do both jobs.

3. Each theorist, expanded

The disparity is invisible if the names are a list. Each of the following is a contribution, then a position on organization and transition.

Proudhon (1809–1865)

Qu’est-ce que la propriété? (1840) is the starting diagnosis of dominion. “Property is theft” is not a claim that having a coat is a crime. It is a claim that the right to extract from other people’s labor through title is. Later he pairs it with possession: occupancy-and-use, the peasant on the land, the artisan in the shop. Système des contradictions économiques (1846) tries to turn political economy against property from inside. Du principe fédératif (1863) is the political form: federated communes, not a Jacobin center.

Organization. Mutualist associations, a people’s bank, federalism. Not a party that takes the state. Not a communist abolition of exchange.

Transition. The sentence this program keeps, from the letter to Marx, 17 May 1846: burn property by a slow fire, rather than give it new strength by a St Bartholomew’s night of the proprietors. Method is economic combination, not a night of the long knives.

What CenLib takes. Possession versus dominion; slow fire; federalism. What it refuses. Proudhon’s household patriarchy (Déjacque’s charge); a residual market in control.

Marx (1818–1883)

The 1844 manuscripts: alienated labor — the product and the activity are not the worker’s. That is an agency claim about economic structure, whatever one thinks of the later method. The German Ideology (1845–46, with Engels): historical materialism, modes of production as the skeleton of epochs. Manifesto (1848): abolish bourgeois property in the means of production, not property generally; “united action of the leading civilized countries” — already a polarity constraint. Capital I (1867): the critique of political economy as a science of a mode. Critique of the Gotha Programme (1875): lower and higher phases; “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” is the higher phase, not a next-Tuesday policy.

Organization. The proletariat as a class that constitutes itself as a political party. The International as an instrument. After the Commune, the lesson he draws is that the existing state machinery cannot be merely taken over — and also that the proletariat must have a political form. Hague 1872 is that lesson enforced against Bakunin.

Transition. The method is a series of steps, not a jump to the bronze axe.

  1. Leave bourgeois society — mixed title in the means of production, a representative office.
  2. The proletariat constitutes itself as a political party and wins political power (Manifesto; Hague 1872).
  3. Socialization of the means of production. Abolish bourgeois property in the plant, not in coats (Manifesto: “the distinguishing feature of Communism is not the abolition of property generally, but the abolition of bourgeois property”).
  4. A transitional dictatorship of the proletariat. The Class Struggles in France (1850) names it; the letter to Weydemeyer, 5 March 1852, states that the class struggle “necessarily leads to the dictatorship of the proletariat”; Critique of the Gotha Programme (1875) puts it between capitalist and communist society: the state of that period “can be nothing but the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat.” Stated as a stepping stone.
  5. Intended landing: the state withers (Engels: it dies out). Classless association of producers; common ownership of the means of production; the office in the museum beside the bronze axe.
  6. Applied landing: the office did not retire. Party-state.

Simultaneity of the leading countries is a constraint, not an ornament. This program takes the mode-claim and the simultaneity constraint as scientific claims about when a stack becomes usable. It refuses the transitional office as a method, because the applied test did not retire it. The map draws these as seats: socialization and the dictatorship on Faye’s left arm; the goal with the left anarchists; the party-state at 9 o’clock.

What CenLib takes. Alienation as an agency claim; historical materialism as “offer what a later material situation will need”; simultaneity. What it refuses. The party-state road; treating the class as the primary agent so the person becomes an organ (see Agency on List and Pettit).

Engels (1820–1895)

The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845). Anti-Dühring (1878). Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884): the state as a public power beside society; when the conditions that required it are gone, it is put in the museum of antiquities, “by the side of the spinning-wheel and the bronze axe.” The withering is Engels’s image. “The state is not ‘abolished.’ It dies out” (Anti-Dühring).

Organization and transition. He is with Marx on the party and the transitional form. The bronze-axe test is nonetheless the criterion this program uses against every office that does not retire, including the one that claimed Marx.

What CenLib takes. Withering as a test, not as a promise issued by the office itself. What it refuses. The implication that seizing the office is the way to run the test.

Bakunin (1814–1876)

Statism and Anarchy (1873). Collectivism: land and instruments socialized from below; distribution often by work. He refuses the word “communist” because it then names state concentration (Babeuf, Cabet, and the Marxist General Council). The International, for him, is a federation of sections, not a General Council that is already a state. Secret brotherhoods sit in his practice — an organizational fact this paper will not wash out. God and the State (posthumous) is the anti-authoritarian anthropology.

Organization. Federated workers’ associations and communes; no new ruling caste; deep suspicion of any “provisional revolutionary political authority.”

Transition. Destroy political power as the first duty. Saint-Imier, 15–16 September 1872, is the written form, with Guillaume: organizing a new political authority to ensure that destruction “would be as dangerous to the proletariat as any government now in existence.”

What CenLib takes as firm structuring. The plant at hired-labor scale is a federated productive association of occupant-operators, not a ministry and not a ticker. No new ruling caste. What it refuses. Secret brotherhoods; insurrection as the method of transition; treating the destruction of political power as a first night rather than as a withering.

Déjacque (1821–1864)

The 1857 letter to Proudhon from New Orleans coins the political libertaire and already takes a communist-anarchist line against Proudhon’s mutualism and against the “high barony of male over female vassal.” Le Libertaire (New York, 1858–61) serializes L’Humanisphère. He is earlier than the 1876–80 Jura turn. Date him so Le Havre is not made to invent a word.

What CenLib takes. The dated word; the refusal to let “liberty” stop at the household or the shop of the master. What it refuses. Nothing here is a constitution.

Guillaume and the Jura (Guillaume 1844–1916)

James Guillaume is the organizer of the anti-authoritarian International after Hague: expelled with Bakunin, 2–7 September 1872; Saint-Imier a week later. The Jura Federation is the Swiss watch-makers’ section that made federalism a practice, not a slogan. Guillaume’s Mémoire is a primary source for the split as the Bakuninists lived it.

What CenLib takes. Federation as organization rather than a General Council-state. What it refuses. The temptation to treat 1872 as a personality quarrel.

Cafiero, Reclus, Kropotkin (the 1876–80 turn)

Italian Federation, Florence 1876; Jura at La Chaux-de-Fonds, October 1880: anarchist communism — from each according to ability, to each according to need. Carlo Cafiero’s “Anarchie et Communisme” (1880) is a load-bearing pamphlet. Élisée Reclus is the geographer of the same turn. Peter Kropotkin (1842–1921): The Conquest of Bread (1892); Fields, Factories and Workshops; Mutual Aid (1902) as the biological warrant — which Mutual Aid refuses as a proof of a property law.

Kropotkin’s later claim: drop “collectivism” because the word has been captured by evolutionary / limited-collectivization uses; declare communism while distinguishing it from pre-1848 authoritarian schools. Déjacque had already taken the communist-anarchist line against Proudhon in the 1850s. The 1880 turn is the mass conversion of the European anarchist movement, not the invention of the idea.

What CenLib takes. Suspicion of a labor-note bureaucracy; the person not an input. What it refuses. Kropotkin as a biological proof; abolition of personal and consumptive title.

Malatesta, Pelloutier, the syndicalists

Errico Malatesta (1853–1932): organization versus the insurrectionary refusal of programs; Anarchy; a lifetime of arguing that an anarchist movement that cannot organize will lose to those who can. Fernand Pelloutier (1867–1901) and the Bourses du Travail; later the CNT in Spain: the union as the organ of transition and of production. Syndicalism is a method, not a third end-state. Platformists after 1926 will say the syndicalist organ was still too loose. Insurrectionary lines will say any platform is a party.

Do not flatten. Mutualists keep markets and occupancy-and-use. Collectivists keep a labor measure. Anarchist communists abolish exchange value. Syndicalists make the union the organ. Platformists want tighter organization after the Russian defeat. Insurrectionary lines refuse programs. These are left-internal. The left/right property chasm is a different axis.

Lenin (1870–1924)

What Is to Be Done? (1902): a vanguard of professional revolutionaries. State and Revolution (1917): still talks withering, still reads Engels, still says the Commune-state is not a state in the old sense. Then: Cheka, War Communism, Kronstadt 1921, faction ban at the Tenth Congress, NEP as economic retreat with political tightening. The applied office is the test of the method, not of the 1848 goal.

What CenLib takes. Nothing from the vanguard as organ. The negative lesson is load-bearing: the office did not retire. What it refuses. The identification of that office with Marx’s end-state, which is the red-scare capture this paper exists to undo.

Makhno, Arshinov, the Platform (1926)

Nestor Makhno’s Free Territory in Ukraine is a field test of the anti-authoritarian method, broken by the war system around it (Empires). Peter Arshinov, Makhno, and others, Organizational Platform of the General Union of Anarchists (Draft) (1926): after the Russian defeat, tighter theoretical and tactical unity. Platformism is a method-reply to Bolshevik organization, not a conversion to it. Synthesists (Voline and others) refuse the Platform as a party in disguise.

What CenLib takes. The warning that a method without organization loses to a method with a security state — and that “more organization” is how a federation becomes a General Council. Both warnings. What it refuses. A platform that writes the constitution in advance of people living the rule.

Konkin (1947–2004)

Samuel Edward Konkin III, New Libertarian Manifesto (1980): agorism — left free markets. Movement of the Libertarian Left. The agora is the goal; counter-economics the means; consistency of ends and means; no party road. Capital-statism is the enemy, not the entrepreneur. Worker/boss is a feudal holdover; the corporate hierarchy imitates the State. Not a method line on the right-anarchist side. He sat next to Rothbard and then named the Left. On the map he sits on our left arm from CenLib. This program takes the method, not Rothbardian joint-stock as the end-state.

What CenLib takes as withering. You do not seize the office and hope it retires. You build occupant-operator plants, local assemblies, and counter-institutions until the absentee form is unused. The bronze axe is a criterion applied to a practice, not a promise issued by a ministry. What it refuses. US-LP property identity; a secondary market in control; the idea that black markets as such are the goal.

4. The method split, in order

Proudhon–Marx, 1846–47

Marx, Engels, and Philippe Gigot write Proudhon from Brussels, 5 May 1846, inviting him into a correspondence of German communists. Proudhon replies from Lyon, 17 May 1846. He will not join a dogmatic campaign. He puts the problem as returning to society, by an economic combination, the wealth withdrawn by another economic combination — “through Political Economy to turn the theory of Property against Property.” Then the slow-fire sentence.

Marx answers in public with The Poverty of Philosophy (1847), against Proudhon’s Système des contradictions économiques, ou Philosophie de la misère (1846). Friendship ends. By the Manifesto (1848) the political-party road is taking shape.

Same identification of a problem. Different method. Slow fire / mutualism versus win the state, socialize the means of production, and hold a transitional dictatorship. History stuck on method. The theories had not yet grown their organizations; the disparity is already in the letters.

First International, Hague, Saint-Imier, 1872

The International Workingmen’s Association (1864) contained Proudhonians, Marxists, and, after 1868, Bakuninists. After the Paris Commune (1871) the fight is explicit: should the proletariat constitute itself as a political party and a state (Marx; Hague resolution on political action), or is any “provisional revolutionary political authority” another fraud (Saint-Imier)?

Hague Congress, 2–7 September 1872: Bakunin and James Guillaume expelled; General Council strengthened; Bakunin could not attend. Saint-Imier, 15–16 September 1872: Spanish, Italian, Jura, French, American delegates reject Hague, declare that “the destruction of all political power is the first duty of the proletariat,” and that organizing a new political authority to ensure that destruction “would be as dangerous to the proletariat as any government now in existence.”

That is the foundational split of the anti-authoritarian International. It is a method split: party-state versus federation. It is not a split about whether producers should be dominated. The theories had grown organizations; the disparity was now a congress, an expulsion, and a counter-congress in the same month.

Collectivism versus anarchist communism, 1876–80

Inside the anti-authoritarian camp a further fracture: how to distribute. Bakunin’s collectivism versus Cafiero / Reclus / Kropotkin on need. See §3. Do not flatten this into 1872. It is a second split, on a different joint.

5. The applied test

The method, run.

Lenin, State and Revolution (1917), still talks withering. The steps are still the stated steps: seize the office, socialize the means of production, hold a dictatorship of the proletariat, then the bronze axe. Then the office. Cheka; War Communism (1918–21) as the applied socialization of the plant; Kronstadt 1921; faction ban at the Tenth Congress; NEP as economic retreat with political tightening. Stalin, “socialism in one country” (1924), retires Engels’s simultaneity constraint and keeps the office. Maoism makes the party-state the subject of permanent revolution. The anarchists’ prediction about method is, on this test, right: the office did not retire. The word “communism” in ordinary US speech now names that office. Marx and Engels’s target — association of producers, common ownership of the means of production, state as museum piece beside the bronze axe — is not what was built.

That is a fork, not a synonym. The dictatorship was the stepping stone. The party-state is the stone that did not move. Date both or produce a fake disagreement. Social democracy and democratic socialism sit on the same arm of the map as a parliamentary walk — more of the means of production under a representative office. They are not these steps.

Field tests on the other method: Makhno’s Free Territory; CNT-FAI in Spain 1936–37, including the May Days in Barcelona, 1937, when the method split became street fighting between the CNT and a rival centralized method. Both anti-authoritarian tests were broken by war plus that rival. See Game of Empires: isolated experiments sit inside a polarity system that selects for security states.

Agorism (Konkin 1980) is a later method line. This program takes the method, not the LP end-state.

6. Infighting is where the attempts decomposed

The author knows the method of transition is not foolproof. This is the stage at which past attempts decomposed: not only by a pole unplugging them, but by inability to agree among people who shared a goal.

  • 1846–47: friendship ends in a book.
  • 1872: expulsion and a counter-International.
  • 1876–80: distribution splits the anti-authoritarians.
  • 1921: Kronstadt, the faction ban — the office eating its left.
  • 1926: Platform versus synthesis, after defeat.
  • 1937: May Days, Barcelona — two lefts, one city, a war on.

A research program that hides those joints is writing a church. CenLib names a hybrid and leaves the remaining specs as open problems because that is the scientific thing to do. A new declaration and constitution among people already living the rule is not something a vanguard should fake in a draft. It is work for later writing, under constraint, without violent means.

7. Red-scare vernacular

Palmer Raids, 1919–20; Second Red Scare / McCarthy, late 1940s–50s; a “new red scare still running,” in the user’s phrase. The method — treat a foreign office as the organ of domestic dissent — is dated as three scares on Propaganda. This paper’s job is the capture of the words.

  • “Communist” = Soviet / Chinese party-state, secret police, gulag. Argument about Marx’s end-state becomes impossible in public because the word already names the method that failed.
  • “Socialist” slides toward any public good.
  • “Anarchist” = chaos, or a black-bloc cartoon.
  • “Libertarian” = US LP, tax protest, shareholder primacy. The dated inversion is Foundations of the Right: Dean Russell, May 1955, trade-marked a word Webster still listed as free-will.

Ironing this out is not etiquette. It is a condition of research. If “communism” cannot be heard as a goal-statement distinct from Leninism, then the 19th-century split (goal shared, method not) is inaudible. If “libertarian” cannot be heard as Belsham 1789 or Déjacque 1857, then center libertarianism sounds like a rebrand of the US party. It is not.

This paper’s reconstruction is not sedition. It is not a coded brief for a night of the proprietors. It is an attempt to make the 19th-century theory audible again so that a non-violent, non-putsch method can be stated without stealing either captured word.

8. What CenLib pulls from the hybrid

Better axiom, from this program, not from 1872: separate private property from the means of production while preserving private property for the person. That is the attempted reconciliation of left and right libertarianism. It is specified in Center. The right-hand furniture — Locke’s proviso, Cohen’s self/world split, title-through-the-firm — is Foundations of the Right. Both are unfinished (threshold, investment without dominion).

Named, so it can be attacked:

PieceTaken fromWhat CenLib does with itWhat it refuses
Person as unitLocke; self-ownership as agencyTitle and voice stay with the personTitle through the scaled firm
WitheringKonkin, agorism; Engels as criterionCounter-economy until the absentee form is unusedSeizing the office; Rothbardian joint-stock
Firm structuringBakunin, collectivismOccupant-operator association at hired-labor scaleSecret brotherhoods; a ministry as owner
PossessionProudhonConsumptive and personal title; occupancyA market in control
Mode of productionMarx / EngelsOffer the stack as what post-scarcity will need; keep simultaneityThe method as steps: socialize the means of production under a dictatorship of the proletariat
Plant as CPROstromDesign principles, not Hardin’s parableA finished constitution
DeclarationUnfinishedAmong people already living the ruleA vanguard draft

The remaining pieces — threshold rule, investment instrument, allotted agenda, mixed constitution, extra-hegemonic or simultaneous transition — are for academics and later drafts to sort. That is not a shrug. It is the admission that this is where infighting ate the earlier attempts.

9. What this paper does not claim

It does not claim that Marx and Bakunin agreed. It does not claim that 1917 was “not real communism” as a slogan that erases the dead. It does not claim that anarchist field tests would have withered the office if only a pole had left them alone — Empires is why that counterfactual is not free. It does not advocate violent means. It does not treat Konkin as Rothbard, or Bakunin as a CenLib author. Konkin named the Libertarian Left; agorism is left free markets. It does claim that the shared 19th-century goal is still audible under dated words, that the method split is the live problem, and that a named hybrid is a scientific proposal, not a church.

10. Attachment to the other axes

Agency is why the person cannot be replaced by class, party, or ticker as the unit. This paper is why that unit was already the fight inside the left.

Game of Empires is why the split was not free to be only domestic, and why a method of stepping off still faces a pole. 1846–1872 is inner-left conflict (goal shared, method not) while the outer board is Concert then industrial many — Dalio’s inner file with different cargo. 1953 and 2003 are why oil, as a named hegemony (Follow the Oil), is not a domestic method-story.

Center is the stack. Read this paper first so “libertarian” and “communist” are dated on the left, and so the hybrid is visible as a pull from named sources rather than as a brand. Read Foundations of the Right so the other capture, and the Lockean file, are not a cartoon of “the LP.” CenLib is named for the join of the two files. It is not a rebrand of either church.

Mutual Aid is why Kropotkin’s biology is not a proof of the stack.

Equilibria is why productive commons is a CPR problem, and why Nash play under imperial preference is the interstate constraint on any domestic method.

  2. 2.Marx, Karl. 1844. Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts. Alienated labor: the activity is not the worker’s. An agency claim about economic structure. Not a proof of 1917.
  3. 3.Berlin, Isaiah. 1958. “Two Concepts of Liberty.” Inaugural lecture, Oxford. Negative liberty as non-interference; positive liberty as self-mastery, capturable by a party that claims to be your real self.
  4. 4.Engels, Friedrich. 1847. Principles of Communism. Question: “Will it be possible for this revolution to take place in one country alone?” Answer: no; it must be simultaneous in the leading civilized countries.
  5. 5.Stalin, J. V. 1924. “The October Revolution and the Tactics of the Russian Communists.” “Socialism in one country” as retirement of Engels’s simultaneity constraint.
  6. 6.Proudhon, Pierre-Joseph. 1840. Qu’est-ce que la propriété? (What Is Property?). “Property is theft” is a claim about dominion, later paired with possession.
  7. 7.Proudhon, Pierre-Joseph. 1863. Du principe fédératif. Federated communes rather than a Jacobin center. Political form of mutualism.
  8. 8.Proudhon, Pierre-Joseph. 1846. Système des contradictions économiques, ou Philosophie de la misère.
  9. 9.Marx, Karl, Friedrich Engels, and Philippe Gigot to Proudhon, Brussels, 5 May 1846; Proudhon to Marx, Lyon, 17 May 1846. The “slow fire” / “St Bartholomew of the proprietors” sentence is Proudhon’s. Reprinted in Marx-Engels Collected Works, vol. 38, and in Proudhon’s Correspondance.
  10. 10.Marx, Karl. 1847. The Poverty of Philosophy. Public answer to Proudhon 1846.
  11. 11.Marx, Karl. 1875. Critique of the Gotha Programme. Lower and higher phases; “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” is the higher phase, not a next-Tuesday policy. Transitional dictatorship stated as the stepping stone; the applied office is a later test.
  12. 12.Marx, Karl, and Friedrich Engels. 1848. Manifesto of the Communist Party. “The distinguishing feature of Communism is not the abolition of property generally, but the abolition of bourgeois property.” Also: “united action of the leading civilized countries.”
  13. 13.Marx, Karl. 1850. The Class Struggles in France, 1848–1850. Names the dictatorship of the proletariat as the proletariat’s political form. A method step, not the bronze-axe end-state.
  14. 14.Marx, Karl to Joseph Weydemeyer, London, 5 March 1852. The class struggle “necessarily leads to the dictatorship of the proletariat”; that dictatorship is a transition to the abolition of all classes. MECW vol. 39.
  15. 15.Déjacque, Joseph. May 1857. De l’Être-Humain mâle et femelle. Lettre à P. J. Proudhon. New Orleans. First recorded political use of libertaire as self-description, against Proudhon’s “liberal and not libertarian.”
  16. 16.Déjacque, Joseph, ed. 1858–1861. Le Libertaire. New York. Journal of the social movement; serializes L’Humanisphère.
  17. 17.International Workingmen’s Association. Hague Congress, 2–7 September 1872. Expulsion of Bakunin and James Guillaume; resolution on political action; General Council strengthened. Minutes in the IWMA documentary collections.
  18. 18.Saint-Imier Congress of the anti-authoritarian International, 15–16 September 1872. Resolution: “the destruction of all political power is the first duty of the proletariat”; a new political authority to ensure that destruction “would be as dangerous to the proletariat as any government now in existence.”
  19. 19.Bakunin, Mikhail. 1873. Statism and Anarchy. Collectivism from below; refusal of “communist” as then naming state concentration.
  20. 20.Cafiero, Carlo. 1880. “Anarchie et Communisme.” Jura Federation, La Chaux-de-Fonds. With Reclus and Kropotkin, the mass conversion of European anarchism from collectivism to anarchist communism (from each according to ability, to each according to need).
  21. 21.Congrès ouvrier du Havre, November 1880. French socialist congress (not solely anarchist). Maitron: the congress named communisme libertaire as the final goal while remaining split on political action. Date the phrase; do not treat Havre as an anarchist founding congress.
  22. 22.Engels, Friedrich. 1878. Anti-Dühring.
  23. 23.Engels, Friedrich. 1884. The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State. The state as a public power beside society; the bronze-axe image for its retirement.
  24. 24.Kropotkin, Peter. 1892. The Conquest of Bread.
  25. 25.Michels, Robert. 1911. Zur Soziologie des Parteiwesens in der modernen Demokratie. English: Political Parties, 1915. Iron law of oligarchy inside socialist parties.
  26. 26.Lenin, V. I. 1917. The State and Revolution. Withering still stated; the subsequent office is the applied test.
  27. 27.Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks). Tenth Congress, March 1921. Faction ban; Kronstadt suppressed the same month.
  28. 28.Avrich, Paul. 1970. Kronstadt 1921. Princeton: Princeton University Press.
  29. 29.Skirda, Alexandre. Nestor Makhno: Anarchy’s Cossack (English translation 2004 of the French study). Primary field test of the anti-authoritarian method, broken by the war system around it.
  30. 30.Arshinov, Peter, Nestor Makhno, et al. 1926. Organizational Platform of the General Union of Anarchists (Draft). Platformism after the Russian defeat.
  31. 31.Konkin, Samuel Edward, III. 1980. New Libertarian Manifesto. Agorism: left free markets; Movement of the Libertarian Left; counter-economics; consistency of ends and means; no party road. Capital-statism as the enemy. This program takes the method from that left-market file, not Rothbardian joint-stock as the end-state.
  32. 32.Kropotkin, Peter. 1902. Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution. London: Heinemann. Collected from The Nineteenth Century. “Mutual aid is as much a law of animal life as mutual struggle.” Ecological, not sentimental: struggle against a harsh environment favors sociability.
  33. 33.Nozick, Robert. 1974. Anarchy, State, and Utopia. New York: Basic Books. US right-libertarian reconstruction of the state from Lockean side-constraints. Entitlement: acquisition, transfer, rectification. Wilt Chamberlain. Weakened proviso. Not Belsham, not Déjacque.
  34. 34.Russell, Dean. 1955. “Who Is a Libertarian?” The Freeman (Foundation for Economic Education), May. Proposes to “trade-mark and reserve” the word for classical liberals who have lost “liberal.” Webster still listed the free-will sense first. The documented American inversion.
  35. 35.Dimitrov, Georgi. 2 August 1935. Report to the Seventh World Congress of the Communist International. Fascism as “the open terrorist dictatorship of the most reactionary, most chauvinistic and most imperialist elements of finance capital.” A Marxist reading of Faye’s right arm, and the collapse of the two pinches into one theory — which this program dates and refuses.
