Paper 04 · Axis F

Competition, Mutual Aid, and the Biological Warrant for Economic Models

Fit is ill-defined. Two apples, or an orchard. Economic models are irreconcilable while biology is unclosed.

Research draft · 22 September 2026

Claim

Economic thought was modeled on biological pictures of agents in a limited-resource environment. Those pictures boil down to competitive or cooperative systems. Competitive political economy received a Spencer–Huxley warrant; mutual-aid anarchism received Kropotkin’s. Fascism is survival of the fittest at all levels. The party-state argues cooperation and commands it. CenLib is the attempted bridge. Fitness and inheritance in the social sense were never repaired. Scarcity can be fought over or planted past: a society is proof of cooperation, a garden is proof. Nature, seen fully, is both. The economic models look irreconcilable because the biological definitions are not closed. Game theory is the shared language that still does not pick a title-regime.

Two apples, or an orchard.

Economic models are pictures of agents in a limited-resource environment, borrowed from biology while fitness and inheritance were still ill-defined. They boil down to competitive or cooperative systems. Fascism is survival of the fittest at all levels. The party-state argues cooperation and staffs an office that commands it. CenLib is the attempted bridge. Nature, seen fully, is both. Click a seat. Paper 04 is the warrant; Paper 06 is the games.

Center libertarianism

Agents in scarcity

The attempted bridge. Personal title — the person as source. Hired-labor plant as a garden the occupants work. Neither costume as proof. Biology has not closed which picture is nature, so the stack will not pretend it has. Two apples, or an orchard: the join is to plant without a ministry and without a ticker.

Center libertarianism

Economic thought did not fall from a mathematical sky. It was modeled, repeatedly, on what theorists took to be biological and ecological imperatives: agents in an environment with limited resources. Those pictures boil down to competitive or cooperative systems. Capitalism as Spencer received it is a competitive sorting, given a nature-warrant. Mutual-aid anarchism is a cooperative sorting, given a contrary warrant. Fascism is survival of the fittest at all levels. The party-state argues cooperation — class solidarity, common plant — and staffs an office that commands it. Center libertarianism is the attempted bridge: keep the person as source, change species at hired-labor scale, plant without a ministry and without a ticker. The map now places every seat on that ecological reading. The hourglass stays office × property. The spectrum is the same seats, read as ecology.

The load-bearing claim of this paper, stated before the history, because it is the claim the other papers now spend:

Our economic models are irreconcilable because our biological definitions are still not closed. Competition versus cooperation; scarcity as a law versus scarcity as a problem that cooperation can retire; whether humans — and other organisms — cooperate. A society is proof that they do. A garden is proof. If Darwin is drawn with no garden and no cooperation, then yes: fight over the two apples. When you see nature fully, it is both. We do not yet have the biological clarity to theorize the correct economic model that should then reflect the best outcome. Equilibria is why the choice of game is already a political act. This paper is why the choice of nature was borrowed while “fit” was still ill-defined.

This is not a proof that markets are “unnatural,” nor that communes are “natural.” Nature does not legislate property law. The claim is narrower and more serious: the grey area around Darwinian “fit” was imported into social theory while “fit” was still ill-defined, and later economic common sense treated one side of that grey area as settled science.

Keep agency as philosophy of action. Keep this paper as the history and biology of the models political economy borrowed. Organism-agency in the Nobles’ work is adjacent to Paper 01; it is evidence inside this paper that gene-centrism is not a closed result.

1. Do not collapse Smith into Spencer

Adam Smith is not a Darwinian. The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) opens with sympathy: “How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others.” The Wealth of Nations (1776) theorizes division of labor, markets, and competition. Darwin later praised Smith’s account of sympathy in The Descent of Man (1871). That is a lineage of moral psychology, not a social-Darwinian program.

Herbert Spencer is the hinge. Social Statics (1851) predates On the Origin of Species (1859). Spencer coins “survival of the fittest” in Principles of Biology (1864); Darwin adopts the phrase in the fifth edition of Origin (1869). Spencer then extends competitive sorting to society: interference with natural competition (charity, protection of the weak) would slow improvement. Later scholars labeled this social Darwinism (Hofstadter, Social Darwinism in American Thought, 1944, popularized the name; revisionists note that Spencer’s own sociology is more Lamarckian than selectionist — use-inheritance, progress). The label is messy. The reception is not: competitive markets acquired a nature-warrant.

The historical claim, stated carefully: capitalism as practiced and theorized in the Spencerian reception is a social experiment predicated on competition, given a biological costume. Smith supplied competitive political economy without that costume. Spencer and Huxley supplied the costume. Right-libertarian common sense still wears it. The economic file of that common sense — Locke, limited liability, the 1955 word, shareholder primacy — is Foundations of the Right. This paper is the warrant. Bequest of a plant is not Mendel, and not fitness.

Lionel Robbins, An Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science (1932): economics as the science of human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses. That definition takes scarcity as the environment. It does not prove that scarcity cannot be retired by planting. Malthus (1798) made the same move earlier, as a population law. Keynes, “Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren” (1930), already asked what happens when the economic problem is solved. Bookchin’s Post-Scarcity Anarchism (1971) is a later, different file — not this stack’s constitution. Date the definition of scarcity, or treat Robbins as nature.

2. Huxley’s gladiatorial nature, Kropotkin’s reply

T. H. Huxley, “The Struggle for Existence in Human Society,” The Nineteenth Century (February 1888): from the moralist’s point of view the animal world is “on about the same level as a gladiators’ show.” Among primitive men, as among animals, “life was a continuous free fight,” a Hobbesian war of each against all beyond the family.

Peter Kropotkin, writing from Siberian field memory and from the English debate, answers in a series in the same journal, collected as Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution (1902):

Mutual aid is as much a law of animal life as mutual struggle… as a factor of evolution, it most probably has a far greater importance.

Kropotkin’s move is ecological, not sentimental. Struggle against a harsh environment (Darwin’s Malthusian third sense of “struggle”) favors sociability within a species. “Who are the fittest: those who are continually at war with each other, or those who support one another?” Those who acquire habits of mutual aid. Stephen Jay Gould, “Kropotkin Was No Crackpot” (1988), restated this for late-20th-century biology: the Russian school saw density and climate, not only dyadic combat.

This is the left-libertarian biological warrant. It is not a proof of anarchist communism. It is a counter to the claim that nature underwrites Hobbes-plus-shareholders.

The twentieth century did not close this. It named mechanisms on the cooperative side, without picking Kropotkin’s property regime:

  • Kin selection (Hamilton 1964): inclusive fitness. Cooperation among relatives can be selected. Not a ministry, and not a ticker.
  • Reciprocal altruism (Trivers 1971): cooperation among non-kin if the future is long enough and cheaters can be refused. Axelrod (1984) is the tournament cousin. Do not cite Trivers as a footnote to 1902; he is neo-Darwinian.
  • Symbiosis / endosymbiosis (Margulis 1967): new wholes from merger, not only from combat. The mitochondrion is not a gladiator.
  • Indirect reciprocity and network reciprocity (Nowak 2006): five rules for the evolution of cooperation — kin, direct reciprocity, indirect reciprocity, network, group. Group selection is the live fight (Sober and Wilson 1998; Okasha 2006 on levels). This program does not pick a winner in that fight. It records that the cooperative side has a literature, and that economic models that ignore it are wearing Huxley as if 1888 were the last word.
  • A cooperative species (Bowles and Gintis 2011): humans as ultrasocial, with punishment and sharing, not as a late overlay on a Hobbesian core.

They do not pick Kropotkin’s property regime. They do pick against any simple “combat is the law.”

3. Darwin was not a neo-Darwinist

Two facts the modern synthesis later downplayed:

Inheritance. In The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication (1868), ch. XXVII, Darwin offers a “provisional hypothesis of pangenesis”: every part throws off gemmules; use and disuse can be transmitted. That is a Lamarckian channel. Weismann’s germ-plasm (1880s–93) cuts soma off from germline. The modern synthesis (Fisher 1930; then Dobzhansky, Mayr, Huxley the grandson) hardens Mendelian discrete inheritance plus selection into neo-Darwinism. Darwin is not that doctrine. Denis Noble’s claim that “Darwin was not a neo-Darwinist” and that Darwin recognized inheritance of acquired characteristics (Noble 2013, 2015, 2016) is, as intellectual history, correct. Whether contemporary physiology has “disproved” the modern synthesis is a live scientific fight, not a result this program should fake.

Sociality. Descent of Man (1871) gives a large role to social instincts, sympathy, and praise and blame. Huxley’s 1888 gladiatorial picture is a narrowing of Darwin, which is exactly Kropotkin’s complaint: “Instead of widening it according to his own hints, his followers narrowed it still more.”

4. Mendel, fitness, and the tautology problem

Mendel’s Versuche (1866) is rediscovered in 1900 (de Vries, Correns, Tschermak). Discrete inheritance solves a real problem for selection: blending inheritance would dilute variation. Population genetics then operationalizes fitness as differential reproductive success of genotypes (or, later, as a propensity to leave offspring: Mills and Beatty 1979; Brandon 1978).

That is progress. It does not make Spencerian “fit” well-defined.

The tautology problem: if “the fittest” means “those that survive,” then “survival of the fittest” says that survivors survive. Philosophers of biology spent a generation on this (Popper initially treated selection as tautological, later retracted; Rosenberg, Waters, and others on propensity). Mills and Beatty’s propensity interpretation is the standard repair: fitness is a disposition, not the outcome. The repair is for biological fitness.

Spencerian social fitness was never repaired. Wealth, power, and market share are not propensities to leave offspring. Treating a firm that outcompetes a shop as “fitter” is a metaphor with a political use. The Mendelian path resolved one grey area (how variation is stored). It did not license the social-Darwinian experiment. That experiment kept running on an unrepaired metaphor.

Inheritance in the social sense is the same unrepaired joint. Bequest of a plant that commands living occupants is a legal operation. It is not Mendel. It is not fitness. Foundations of the Right dates the legal furniture. This paper dates the costume. Open problem 16; open problem 33.

5. The Nobles, selfish gene, organism as agent

Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene (1976): organisms as “lumbering robots” built by replicators. Denis Noble, The Music of Life (2006); Dance to the Tune of Life: Biological Relativity (2016); with Raymond Noble, Understanding Living Systems (2023). Claims relevant here:

  • There is no privileged level of causation (biological relativity: Noble 2012).
  • Genes are used by organisms; they are not active causes in the everyday sense of “genes for.”
  • “Selfish” is a metaphor; Dawkins himself doubted there is an experiment that could prove the claim (The Extended Phenotype, 1982, p. 1). Noble’s inversion (“prisoner genes”) is, by that standard, empirically equivalent as metaphor and therefore not a scientific theory if untestable (Noble 2011).
  • Organisms harness stochasticity; agency is not a ghost in the machine but a physiological use of variation (Noble and Noble 2018).
  • Darwin’s pangenesis is closer to current evidence of soma–germline traffic than Weismann’s barrier allowed.

Dating the relationship, because it will be repeated wrong: Denis Noble was Richard Dawkins’s doctoral examiner at Oxford, not his doctoral advisor. Dawkins has said so in debate (HowTheLightGetsIn, 2022). Noble’s DPhil was with Otto Hutter at UCL (1961). The documented relation is examiner. The disagreement is real either way.

This program does not treat Noble as having closed evolutionary biology. Critics (orthodox neo-Darwinists) deny that epigenetics and systems physiology overturn the modern synthesis. What it does treat as closed is this: gene-centrism is not a settled warrant for modeling persons as vehicles of replicators, nor firms as vehicles of capital, nor classes as vehicles of History. If economic thought needed a biological picture of the unit, the unit is at least as plausibly the organism-agent as the selfish bit of chromosome.

That is the hinge to Paper 01: any definition of agency that erases the individual into an ensemble (gene pool, class, ticker) is changing the subject. The Nobles give a biological reason to refuse the erasure. They do not give a constitution. They also do not close scarcity. An organism that harnesses stochasticity is still in an environment. The question is whether that environment is a gladiatorial show, a garden, or both.

6. Two apples, or an orchard

The parable this program now spends.

Two people, two apples, a limited-resource environment. They can fight over the apples. That is hawk–dove, or PD if the pie is treated as fixed and taking is dominant. They can also share the apples and plant an orchard — work together for a shared interest that retires the scarcity of these two apples by producing more. That is a stag hunt: the orchard pays only if both show up; a hare (grab an apple and leave) is the sure small prize.

Scarcity is not purely how humans work in nature. It is a description of a moment. Cooperation can change the environment the next moment meets. A society is already that fact at scale: we do not, as a rule, fight over every calorie. A garden is that fact in miniature: someone planted. If your Darwin has no garden, you have narrowed Darwin to Huxley’s show. When you see nature fully — mutual aid, reciprocal altruism, symbiosis, social instincts in Descent, as well as contest — it is both.

Robbins took scarce means with alternative uses as the definition of economics. That is a useful frame for a moment of allocation. It becomes a political costume when it is treated as a proof that the orchard is impossible, or that planting it requires a ministry, or that the fittest should take both apples. Malthus made population a law against the garden. The garden kept being planted.

The party-state argues the orchard and staffs a ministry to command the planting. Fascism argues that the apples belong to the fit, at every level. Competitive political economy (Smith without Spencer) argues trade. Mutual-aid anarchism argues planting without the ministry. CenLib is the attempted join: personal title stays; the hired-labor plant is the orchard the occupants work. None of these is licensed by a closed biology. All of them spent a biology.

7. Society and the garden as existence proofs

A society is not a theory of cooperation. It is the fact of it. Language, law, a harvest, a road, a child raised: none of these is a one-shot PD won by defection. Hardin’s pasture, written as open access with no communication, is a parable that deletes the society in order to prove the tragedy. Ostrom put the society back (Equilibria). Kropotkin put the ecology back. This section puts the existence proof on the table so the next economic model cannot start from “humans do not cooperate.”

A garden is the same proof at the scale of a plot. Planting is delayed consumption. Delayed consumption is already cooperation with a future self, and usually with others who water, fence, and share. If Darwin is drawn as no garden, the drawing has already chosen Huxley. Darwin’s own Variation is a book of domestication — of gardens, herds, selection by gardeners. The organism-agent of the Nobles is, among other things, a gardener of its own variation. That is not a constitution. It is a refusal of the gladiatorial starting point.

What would a Darwin with no garden look like, as an economic model? Fight over two apples; scarcity as law; fitness as who took them; inheritance as who may take the next ones. That is the unrepaired Spencerian costume, and it is the fascist costume at the limit: struggle as law at all levels. What would a Darwin of only gardens look like? Mutual aid as the only law; no contest; no hawk. Kropotkin did not actually write that — he wrote as much a law as mutual struggle. The cartoon of only gardens is the left-hand costume. Both costumes skip the record.

8. Nature is both; the models are irreconcilable while the definitions are not closed

The clear insight, driven home:

  • Competition is in nature. Contest over a resource is real. Maynard Smith’s hawks are not a metaphor only.
  • Cooperation is in nature. Mutual aid, reciprocity, symbiosis, social instincts, ultrasocial punishment. Kropotkin, Trivers, Margulis, Hamilton, Nowak, Bowles and Gintis.
  • Scarcity is a moment of a limited-resource environment. It can be fought over or planted past. Robbins defined economics on the fight. The orchard is the other move.
  • Fitness in the social sense was never repaired. Inheritance of a plant is not Mendel.
  • The unit is still fought over: gene, organism, group, class, ticker, person. Denis and Raymond Noble refuse gene-centrism as a privileged level. They do not close the economic unit. Agency is that unit, still working.

Until those definitions close — and this program does not fake a close — economic models that treat one side as nature and the other as sentiment are not science. They are costumes. That is why left and right economic models look irreconcilable: they imported opposite 19th-century biological warrants and then forgot they were warrants. CenLib is named for the attempt to join the property files without wearing either costume as proof. It cannot wait for biology to finish. It also cannot pretend biology has finished. Open problems 16, 17, 40, 41.

Game theory is the shared language that still does not pick the model. It has more to say than the PD this corpus first spent. Stag hunt, hawk–dove, public goods, ESS, Nowak’s five rules, Skyrms on the social contract: Paper 06 now takes those as apparatus, not as ornaments. Choosing PD as “the” game of society is already the two-apples move. Choosing stag hunt is already the orchard. The biology has not licensed either choice as the only nature.

9. Where each system sits

The map is office × property as an hourglass. The ecological reading is a second figure of the same seats. Not a third axis smashed onto the pinch — that would hide Faye. A 1D spectrum: mutual aid to struggle. Click a seat on either figure.

Fascism is survival of the fittest at all levels. Race, nation, person as organ of the Volk. Struggle as law. Huxley’s show made policy. There is no orchard on that seat — only the apples, and who is fit to take them. That is why it sits at the struggle pole, and why it pinches as office with the party-state without being the same ecology. The offices meet. The pictures of nature do not.

The party-state argues cooperation. Class solidarity; socialized plant; from each according to ability, to each according to work, then need. Marxism’s stated goal sits with anarchist communism on our shoe: the intended garden, the bronze axe, no standing machine. The party-state is the stuck method: a garden staffed by a ministry. Cooperation as command is not Kropotkin’s mutual aid, and not CenLib’s occupants. That is the fracture Fractures already dated as goal versus method. On the ecological spectrum the party-state therefore sits on the cooperative side of the join — it argues the orchard — and not at fascism. The pinch is office. The ecology is the argument.

Anarchist communism is mutual aid as law, without the office. Kropotkin’s warrant, on our shoe. Anarcho-capitalism is competitive title through the scaled firm as nature: homestead, trade, hired labor by title. Voluntary, not racial. The right-hand picture of agents in scarcity: take the apple by title, do not plant in common. They almost touch as anti-office. They split on the orchard.

CenLib is the attempted bridge. Personal title stays (the person as source). The hired-labor plant is the orchard the occupants work. Neither costume as proof. Two apples, or an orchard: the join is to plant without a ministry and without a ticker. Mixed-economy center sits at the other end of the office axis, also near the middle of this spectrum — mixed title, mixed picture — and that is why they are opposite on the hourglass and neighbors on ecology. The difference is the office, and who gardens.

The other seats fill in. Rand is literary SotF of the creator. Junta is Chicago competition under a force that can kill. Cartel is competition suspended, then commanded — a pack, not a garden. Corporatism is the nation as the unit of struggle. Agorism, Tucker, Warren, Proudhon, Bakunin walk the cooperative arm of our shoe. Social democracy is welfare cooperation on a competitive plant. Distributism is a garden of plots, still an older office. Georgism shares the ground and titles the trees. Steiner socializes the gift of nature and keeps the person. Hoppe fences the orchard by who may plant. The captured word (“national-anarchism”) wears mutual-aid clothes over a blood-struggle.

Placement is an argument, not a codebook. Open problem 40: score this reading so Tucker and Rothbard cannot be collapsed on ecology any more than they can on property.

10. What this does not license

  • It does not follow from Kropotkin that markets are impossible, or from Spencer that they are mandatory.
  • It does not follow from Noble that free will is compatible with determinism. See Paper 01: do not smuggle.
  • It does not follow from Trivers that shareholder primacy is “reciprocal altruism.”
  • It does not follow from a garden that scarcity has been abolished. A later material situation may need a different mix. No crystal ball. Center is offered as what that situation will need, not as a proof that biology has picked it.
  • It does not finish the property triad. Biology can constrain which pictures of the unit are available. Law still has to write title.
  • It does not pick Nowak’s five rules, or group selection, or the Nobles against the modern synthesis, as a closed result.

The useful residue: right-libertarian common sense still talks as if competition were the only natural relation and fitness were obvious. Left-libertarian common sense still talks as if mutual aid were the only natural relation. Fascism spent the first costume at all levels. The party-state spent the second as a command. Both are 19th-century biological warrants wearing 21st-century clothes. Center libertarianism has to stop borrowing either costume as proof, and has to notice that the irreconcilability of the economic models is downstream of unclosed biology. Foundations of the Right is why bequest and shareholder primacy are legal operations, not biological ones. Equilibria is why the game-form is a choice. Center is the join that refuses both costumes. Synthesis is the lock.

Huxley versus Kropotkin is also an inner-civilizational fight over the warrant for the outer game (Empires: Dalio’s inner/outer pair). Resource war and energy hegemony (Follow the Oil) are polarity facts. They are not Spencer. Do not underwrite a chokepoint with unrepaired fitness.

Harari’s Sapiens and Homo Deus are not a third biological warrant. Imagined orders and a possible “useless class” are a historian’s pressure on political economy, cited in Empires and Center as such. They do not tell us whether nature prefers mutual aid or combat. Keep this paper as the history of the models political economy borrowed from biology. Keep Harari on the polarity and replacement board.
